TULUM 2025 SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM
Our sustainability plan for Day Zero 2025 builds on our commitment to positively impact both the local environment and community. This year, we are continuing our partnerships with organizations dedicated to planting trees, cleaning up local beaches - including a focused effort on Sian Ka’an Beach, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to remove waste such as microplastics and general trash while preserving its fragile ecosystem - and constructing protective grids for sea turtles to safeguard their nests and support their conservation.
The festival will source food exclusively from local farms, highlighting the importance of sustainable agriculture, and will remain a 100% plastic-free environment. Read below for more details on these initiatives and the incredible organizations helping to make them happen.
Tulum Beach Clean Up: Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve
Our 'Beach Clean Up' initiative focuses on removing waste, including microplastics and general trash, from Santa Rosa and Santa Fe Beach to protect the fragile ecosystem of Sian Ka’an Beach. This UNESCO World Heritage site near Tulum is an ecological treasure, home to diverse wildlife like jaguars, manatees, and sea turtles. Rich in Mayan history and spiritual significance, it reflects the community's dedication to conservation and sustainable tourism.
Reforestation
In collaboration with BCAT and the Secretary of the Environment of Tulum, Day Zero is organizing the reforestation of an entire avenue with the donation of 111 trees. This initiative also includes providing all necessary materials and equipment, such as shovels, pickaxes, and soil, to ensure the project’s success. Machinery work and initial preparations will take place in December, with the planting of the trees scheduled for January.
Turtles Preservation
Our efforts extend beyond waste removal to include the construction of protective grids for sea turtles, ensuring their nests are safeguarded from predators and human interference. These grids are designed to create a safe environment for hatchlings, contributing to the preservation of endangered turtle species that call Sian Ka’an Beach home.
Additionally, we are committed to fostering environmental awareness from an early age by providing safe and engaging educational programs for local children. These initiatives aim to inspire future generations to take pride in and actively protect their natural surroundings, ensuring the legacy of conservation continues in Tulum and beyond.
Day Zero Market
Each year the Day Zero Market is 100% plastic-free and focuses on organic products from communities and local farms.
